Mock-Ups, High-Fidelity Prototype
Year
2016
With this project, I set out to create a solution that would improve the traveling experience of airline passengers who check in luggage.
It was the intention of the design to grant users visibility and traceability of their luggage throughout the entire traveling process in order to ease the anxiety and stress of possibly losing their bags.
My design process was conducted over the span of ten weeks and involved interviewing and surveying potential users, ideating potential solutions, and culminated in the creation of a high fidelity prototype that was tested with more potential users.
Case Study
Research Question
"How can I improve the experience of airline passengers who check in their luggage?"
Research Methods
User Surveys
Collected data from over 240 user surveys in order to quickly quantify what aspects of checking in luggage were most important to users and what their greatest fears with the process were.
User Interviews
Conducted six interviews with airline passengers who had experience checking in luggage in order to hear their stories and discover their greatest pain points with the process.
Competitive Analysis
Compared three products that currently existed in the market to identify what solutions or features were proving effective for users and what users still found to be lacking.
Research Findings
Based on the results of research, the three biggest user concerns and needs were discovered:
Tracking Luggage
Being notified if luggage is lost or stolen
Reporting damaged luggage to airports and airlines
Personas
Using my collected data, I created three personas to represent the typical airline travelers that check in luggage in order to personify the user goals and inspire design decisions.
Ideation Sketches
Inspired by the data and stories that users provided about their greatest needs and concerns when checking in luggage, I created several ideation sketches to brainstorm potential solutions that could help improve the experience.
Final Solution
Design Decisions
Mobile Application
Designed a prototype for a mobile application for travelers to track and report on their luggage as it was discovered that a vast majority of users travel with some sort of smartphone
Tracking
Integrated a tracking feature that displays status of luggage and sends user updates of progress throughout the check-in process
Notifications
Built notification feature that updates user if luggage is lost and prompts user to enter return address for luggage to be sent to
Report Damage
Created a feature that allows user to report damage to luggage with photo evidence to be sent to airline and airport
